Jan McArd on the Chasing Dreams podcast

Managing Director of Jan McDermott Chartered Accountants and keen marathoner Jan, recently took part in the Chasing Dreams podcast to discuss her accounting career and experience in the industry. Starting at the beginning, Jan achieved good grades at school and was encouraged to go to university by her parents. But with no particular core interests that she wanted to pursue into a career at that stage, Jan decided to decline a place at university.

Following this, her parents encouraged her to get a job, so she went for an interview at a local accounting technicians after seeing it advertised in the local paper. The chartered accountant that interviewed her found her a place at a local firm and now with 33 years in the industry she’s never looked back, even though her original plan was to give the job six months to see how it goes.

Jan revealed a common misconception about accountancy is that you need to be good at maths, but in her opinion that’s not the case. Accountancy isn’t about maths it’s about numbers and being good at maths doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be a good accountant. Also, it’s being equipped with the right knowledge to provide relevant tailored advice to business owners to help them manage their finances effectively.

It’s this detailed knowledge of accountancy and best practices combine with the technology available now that allows Jan to relate to business owners and develop a key understanding of their needs. As well as advising them on what they should prioritise from a financial perspective. There is a widely known stereotype of accountants that they’re normally quite stuffy and boring, but Jan proves this is definitely not the case.
